Visit to the DNA Lab of the University of Twente
Monday 18th December 2017, several students from ISTwente secondary paid a visit to the DNA Lab of the University of Twente. Here, the students worked on a fictional forensic investigation. They received several vials with small amounts of DNA of possible perpetrators, and one vial with a small amount of DNA of the person of interest.
They first used PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to increase the amount of DNA for later analyses. To visualise their PCR product, the students then performed gel electrophoresis. Lastly, the students used a UV-lamp to show the bands of DNA created by gel electophoresis, and compared the DNA profile of the person of interest to the DNA profiles of possible perpetrators. In the end, they figured out who committed the crime!
